VINAUDIT CANADA / BUYING A USED CAR IN ONTARIO

Ontario UVIP vs CARFAX Canada: What’s the Difference?

The Ontario Used Vehicle Information Package (UVIP) and a CARFAX Canada vehicle history report help buyers research a used vehicle, but they serve different purposes. A UVIP provides official Ontario registration and lien information. A CARFAX Canada report searches available vehicle-history records from participating sources in Canada and the United States.

OFFICIAL ONTARIO DOCUMENT

What is an Ontario Used Vehicle Information Package?

A Used Vehicle Information Package is an Ontario government document that provides details about a vehicle and its registration history in the province. In a typical private sale of an eligible used vehicle, the seller must provide the UVIP to the buyer. Exceptions apply, including purchases from an Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC) registered dealer.

What information does a UVIP include?

  • Vehicle details, such as year, make, model, body type and colour.
  • Ontario registration history, including current and previous registered owners, their cities and reported odometer readings.
  • Available registered lien information associated with the vehicle.
  • Vehicle status information, including whether it is recorded as unfit or reported as wrecked.
  • Average wholesale value information for Ontario retail sales tax purposes and a bill-of-sale section.
Important: A UVIP is not a complete vehicle-history or mechanical-condition report. It does not serve as a comprehensive source of collision, recall or out-of-province history. Review other sources and arrange an independent inspection before buying.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLE-HISTORY SERVICE

What does a CARFAX Canada report provide?

CARFAX Canada is a commercial vehicle-history provider. Depending on the vehicle and the report purchased, it can include available damage and accident records, registration and branding information, odometer readings, theft status, recall information and matching U.S. history. The report reflects information supplied by participating sources; some events may not have been reported.

Vehicle History Report

Searches available history records related to the VIN. The standard vehicle-history report does not include a Canadian lien search.

Vehicle History Report + Lien Check

Adds a Canadian lien search in provinces and territories where the vehicle has been registered, subject to the service’s geographic coverage and terms.

Unlike the Ontario UVIP, a CARFAX Canada report is not a substitute for required Ontario transfer paperwork. Buyers should also confirm any outstanding financial interest, reported damage and the vehicle’s physical condition independently where appropriate.

SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISON

UVIP vs CARFAX Canada: Key differences

Both resources can support a better buying decision, but the right choice depends on the information you need and how the vehicle is being sold.

WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Do you need a UVIP, a CARFAX report, or both?

Buying from a private seller in Ontario

Ask the seller for the required UVIP and review the registered-owner and lien details. A separate vehicle-history report can help you research damage, prior registrations and other reported events beyond the Ontario package.

Buying from an OMVIC-registered dealership

A dealer sale is generally exempt from the UVIP requirement. Review the dealer’s written disclosures, check the vehicle’s history, and consider independent checks before completing the purchase.

Buying a vehicle previously registered outside Ontario

An Ontario UVIP focuses on Ontario records. A vehicle-history report may help identify matching records from other jurisdictions, but verify documents and any liens with the appropriate official registries.

Neither document verifies every aspect of a vehicle’s condition. A mechanic’s pre-purchase inspection, matching VINs and proper transfer documents remain important.

PRACTICAL NEXT STEPS

How to get a Used Vehicle Information Package in Ontario

  1. Get the VIN or Ontario plate number. Confirm that the VIN on the vehicle matches the seller’s registration paperwork.
  2. Request the UVIP from the seller. For an eligible private sale, the seller is normally responsible for providing it. A buyer can also order a package independently.
  3. Order through ServiceOntario. A UVIP can be ordered online or purchased in person at a ServiceOntario centre using the required identification details.
  4. Read the complete package. Check the vehicle description, registered-owner history, lien records, odometer entries and vehicle status. Investigate discrepancies before paying.
  5. Complete the remaining checks. Confirm any lien discharge, consider a history report and arrange an inspection. Follow Ontario’s requirements for the bill of sale and ownership transfer.

ADDITIONAL VEHICLE RESEARCH

What about VinAudit Canada and other vehicle checks?

VinAudit Canada is another vehicle-history reporting option. Its reports compile available vehicle specifications, registration records, odometer readings, vehicle-status information, theft records and other matching data, depending on the VIN and participating sources. It can complement an Ontario UVIP, but it does not replace the official package when one is required.

A full VinAudit vehicle-history report may require payment. Availability of individual records varies. For a specific financial interest, review the lien-check guidance and confirm the relevant official registry records.

Other useful checks before you buy

01

Confirm the VIN and seller’s authority. Match the identifiers on the car and the documentation.

02

Check vehicle status and liens. Review the Ontario UVIP and verify any unclear or unresolved secured interest.

03

Research theft and recalls. Use CPIC’s stolen-vehicle search and Transport Canada recall resources as applicable.

04

Arrange an inspection. Have a qualified technician assess the vehicle’s actual condition before committing to the purchase.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is a UVIP mandatory when selling a used car in Ontario?

For most eligible private vehicle sales in Ontario, yes. The seller is generally required to provide the UVIP. Exemptions include purchases from an OMVIC-registered dealer and certain specified transfers. Check ServiceOntario’s guidance for your situation.

Does a UVIP show accident history?

A UVIP may show certain vehicle-status information, including whether a vehicle was reported as wrecked, but it is not a comprehensive accident, claims or damage-history report. Consider a separate vehicle-history search and physical inspection.

Does a UVIP show liens?

Yes. The Ontario package includes available vehicle lien information. Review the details carefully and confirm that any financial interest has been properly discharged before completing the purchase.

Does every CARFAX Canada report include a lien check?

No. CARFAX Canada offers a standard Vehicle History Report and a separate Vehicle History Report + Lien Check option. Check which product you are purchasing if lien information is important to your transaction.

Can CARFAX Canada replace the Ontario UVIP?

No. A commercial vehicle-history report cannot replace the Ontario UVIP when provincial rules require the seller to provide one.

Is a UVIP useful for a vehicle imported into Ontario?

It can show available Ontario registration information, but it is not a complete record of the vehicle’s earlier history outside Ontario. Review available reports and documents from other jurisdictions as needed.

Should I get an inspection even if both reports look clear?

Yes. Registration documents and historical records cannot establish a vehicle’s full mechanical or structural condition. An independent inspection provides a separate assessment of the vehicle.

MAKE AN INFORMED PURCHASE

Review the records, then inspect the vehicle

A UVIP can help you confirm Ontario registration and lien information. Vehicle-history reports add another layer of research. Together with a careful inspection and proper transfer paperwork, these checks can help you make a more informed decision.
